Today, we honor and celebrate the lives, art, and enduring spirit of Pat and Monty Blakely, whose impact on our community and Western Texas College continues to inspire us.

Monty, a Snyder native and a deeply gifted artist at heart, spent years expressing his creative passion through painting and sculpture. He learned under mentors like Ty Brunson and John Gibson. Pat, through determination and dedication, earned her degree from WTC in 1985 before becoming the founding director of the college’s Image program, later continuing her work in the art museum world.

Together, their shared love for art, community, and education created a powerful legacy. Through the Pat & Monty Blakely Scholarship, their passion lives on, opening doors for WTC students to pursue their education and fulfill their potential.

We are deeply grateful for the mark they left on our WTC family and community! 💙✨

Today, we pause to look back on and celebrate a truly remarkable life. Born on July 2, 1933, Betty Burrow brought so much warmth, dedication, and grace into our world.

For 23 incredible years, Mrs. Burrow didn't just teach fifth grade at Ira; she shaped generations, inspired minds, and became a cornerstone of our community. From the 1954-55 school year until her retirement, Ira was her home, her passion, and her only school.

Whether you remember her sharing her famous seashell collection during oceanography lessons, guiding us through the DARE program, or encouraging us to find our voices through creative writing, Mrs. Burrow always brought her whole heart into the classroom. It’s no wonder she was named the District 18 PTA Outstanding Educator of the Year in 1988!

To ensure her incredible legacy of dedication continues to uplift future generations, the Betty Burrow Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at Western Texas College. This scholarship will help future Ira graduates further their education, keeping her passion for learning alive forever.

✨ If Mrs. Burrow impacted your life, please share your favorite memories of her in the comments below! 👇

"If the deal was hot, you had to get there." — Mrs. Edith Whatley McKanna

Edith wasn’t just ahead of her time; she was flying far above it. As a Captain and liaison officer for the Civil Air Patrol during World War II, she served her country with fierce determination. When she returned home to West Texas, she brought that same unstoppable energy down to earth and straight into the oil fields.

She became the first Texas woman to solo her own plane, using her wings to scout drilling sites, secure leases, and manage operations for the Imperial and Progressive Oil Companies. In a male-dominated industry in the 1940s, Edith stood well ahead of the pack, proving that grit, skill, and passion know no gender.

Today, her pioneering spirit lives on through the Edith Whatley McKanna Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is a launching pad for the next generation of trailblazers, dreamers, and leaders who refuse to be grounded by expectations.

To all the students chasing big dreams: Let Edith’s story remind you to take the driver’s seat, or the pilot’s seat, of your own destiny. ✈️💼

Celebrating the Legendary Virginia Whitson! 🔔🏀
Snyder and Scurry County have been blessed with some truly incredible souls, and today we want to shine a spotlight on one of our absolute finest: the amazing Virginia Whitson!
Many of you probably remember her as the ultimate Western Texas College basketball superfan, the "little old lady with the big cowbell" who brought endless energy and spirit to every single game. 📣 But Virginia’s impact went so much deeper than her iconic cowbell.
Did you know?
🏫 She was a retired school music teacher and shared her talents as the pianist for the Golden K Kiwanis Club.
🕒 She dedicated more than 20,000 hours of volunteer work to our Senior Citizens Center!
💰 Over just a two-year period, she single-handedly raised and contributed more than $1,400 toward a basketball scholarship at WTC to support our students.
When she eventually moved to Mineral Wells, she left a massive hole in our community. As one local Kiwanis member perfectly put it back then: "You can do what we're doing since you stole her from us — without!"
We need your help to keep her story alive!
We are gathering historical information and pictures of Virginia to honor her memory, but we are missing a few pieces of her timeline, including her birthday and the day she passed.
💬 Do you have a favorite memory of Virginia? Do you know more about her life, her family, or her years in Snyder? Please drop your stories, photos, and any details you remember in the comments below! Let’s come together and celebrate a woman who gave so much of her heart to our community.

We are pausing today to look back and deeply honor the memory of a truly remarkable woman, devoted nurse, and beloved member of our community, Dorothy Teague (June 23, 1929 – February 14, 1987).
Dorothy spent her life in service to others. After earning her title as an LVN at the Medical Arts Hospital in August 1965, she brought her immense talent, warmth, and dedication to Snyder in 1972. As a compassionate nurse at the Cogdell General Hospital, she was a comforting presence to countless families during their most vulnerable moments.
To ensure her spirit of lifelong care and learning lives on, the Dorothy Teague Memorial Scholarship helps the next generation of healthcare heroes pursue their dreams. Dorothy’s hands-on dedication to healing set a standard for us all, and through this scholarship, her light continues to guide future nurses.
Please join us in celebrating Dorothy’s incredible journey, her beautifully lived life, and the enduring legacy she left behind in Snyder and beyond. 🩺❤️
